Climbing Kilimanjaro with Justin Caplan – Part 15

This video is a beautiful illustration of what good leadership looks like.

Notice how our guide Will shows expert leadership:

  1. He carefully chooses the best path for me to follow in his footsteps. Each step is deliberate and well-placed.
  2. He is willing to go first and navigate obstacles.
  3. He goes slowly enough for me to stay with him but keeps a steady pace making forward progress.

“Pole. Pole.” was our mantra as we took the final hikes of our journey. The Swahili phrase translates, “Slowly. Slowly.” It’s truly the only way to handle the steep inclines and lower oxygen levels due to the higher altitudes.

Many thoughts were racing through all of our minds as the end of our journey drew nearer.

My friend, Matthew, penned these words:

“We couldn’t have summited as individuals – the task would have been insurmountable. It had to be a team. It had to be 9 for 1 and 1 for 9.”

That’s the key to outstanding leadership. You have to know how to build teams that work well together: All for one – and one for all.
